3 Big Ways Manufacturing Impacts Your Life [Infographic]
Friday marks the second annual Manufacturing Day — a day set to address common misconceptions about manufacturing impacts by giving manufacturers an opportunity to open their doors and show, in a coordinated effort, what manufacturing is, and what it isn’t.
Manufacturing impacts much more in your life than you likely think — even if you don’t work in the manufacturing industry. If you’ve ever purchased an item that made your life easier, manufacturing was behind it.
3 Ways of Impact
Manufacturing impacts our lives and our country in three main ways:
Manufacturing Enables our Everyday Lives
The wide range of companies and their products reflected on the infographic below shows just how much the manufacturing industry provides to each of us — everything from food and drinks to vehicles, appliances, skincare, transportation, and more.
All of your favorite — and essential! — products underwent some form of manufacturing. Unless you personally put something together or grew food in your backyard, everything you use in your life is possible because it was manufactured.
Manufacturing Drives Our Economy
Manufacturing is the backbone of the American economy.
The manufacturing industry supports more than 18.5 million U.S. jobs, comprises nearly 12% of our GDP, and U.S. manufacturing is the 9th largest economy in the world. Every $1 spent in manufacturing creates $1.40 for the U.S. economy.
It also supports a number of other industries — like retail and food service — that are focused around selling goods to consumers.
Without manufacturing, our economy would be in serious trouble.
Manufacturing Offers Diverse Career Opportunities
When we talk about manufacturing, it’s so much more than assembly lines.
The manufacturing industry boasts a number of career opportunities, including:
- Engineers
- Computer Programmers / Operators
- Designers
- Operations Managers
- Sales & Marketing
- Human Resources
- Welders
- Assemblers
- Machinists
- Electricians
- Researchers
- Fabricators
- And more!
There is something for just about everyone in the manufacturing industry — many of which start at $60,000 a year or more.
Manufacturing Day Infographic
In an effort to show the impact manufacturing has on our world, the team at Manufacturing Day put together an infographic that tells the story of manufacturing. It shows how manufacturing enables our everyday lives, drives our economy, offers many different rewarding careers, and what can happen when communities across the country come together to show the public what manufacturing is.
